Mock drafts this time of year are crazy, but definitely fun to look at. Now that the NFL Draft is over, the discussion has begun regarding who should go where. Check out the latest expert mock draft I participated in, and you may be surprised to see who was drafted in Round 1, and who “fell” to me at number two overall.
The following mock draft is based on this scoring system - 4 points for passing TDs, 6 points for TDs, 1 point per 10 yards rushing and/or receiving, 1 point per 20 yards passing, 1 point per reception and basic team defense scoring. There are 12 teams in this league, and each team must start 1 QB, 2 RBs, 2 WRs, 1 TE, 1 PK, 1 D/ST.
Team 1 - LaDainian Tomlinson, Chargers RB - Well, even though we’ve been preaching that AP should be the first overall pick in all leagues, regardless of format, there are obviously some folks out there who still think LT belongs at the top of the pack.
Team 2 (Paul Hickey) - Adrian Peterson, Vikings RB - Man, was I THRILLED to see AP fall to me at number two. In my mind, this guy is far and away the top overall choice in 2008 seasonal drafts, and I honestly would have taken Joseph Addai here if Team 1 would’ve chosen AP.
Team 3 - Brian Westbrook, Eagles RB - An interesting move with Addai and Steven Jackson still on the board, but the fact that the Eagles rarely run a play without Westbrook touching the ball makes this probably a pretty safe pick.
Team 4 - Tom Brady, Patriots QB - I just don’t understand what some people are thinking. If this were a league awarding six points per passing TD, I could maybe understand this, but Brady’s big season came a year ago. The chances of him throwing for 50+ TDs again are slim to none, and there’s no reason to pick a QB in round one, with sleepers guys like Derek Anderson, Ben Roethlisberber and Donovan McNabb available later on.
Team 5 - Steven Jackson, Rams RB - Jackson should NEVER fall further than this in 2008 seasonal drafts. He’ll be the absolute centerpiece of Al Saunders’ offense, and with Orlando Pace healthy, a 1,500 yard, 70+ reception season isn’t out of the question.
Team 6 - Joseph Addai, Colts RB - Getting Addai sixth overall in a PPR league is the steal of the draft, I’m telling you. This guy is a top three fantasy player in 2008. He’s tough, versatile, plays through injuries, and won’t share work with anyone. In the Colts high-powered offense, he’s as good a bet as anyone to score 20 TDs.
Team 7 - Frank Gore, Niners RB - Gore is a great pick here, especially in PPR leagues, where Mike Martz is due to get him the rock via the air at least five times a game. What he lacks in the TD column, he’ll more than make up for in reception totals.
Team 8 - Randy Moss, Patriots WR - With most of the top runners off the board, Moss is a solid choice. He’s for sure a top tier fantasy producer in PPR leagues, and should come close to 20 TDs again in 2008 if he stays healthy. This year’s seasonal drafts are deep at the RB spot, so taking Moss in mid-Round 1 is a solid idea.
Team 9 - Larry Johnson, Chiefs RB - Believe it or not, LJ is a great value here. He should have a great year in Chan Gailey’s offense, running behind Branden Albert - who is expect to start at left tackle in his rookie season. Rookie Jamaal Charles will spell him often, but won’t take any key opportunities away.
Team 10 - Peyton Manning, Colts QB - Why? I just don’t understand this logic. With guys like Willis McGahee, Clinton Portis, Ryan Grant and Marshawn Lynch on the board, why would anyone take Manning? He’s as close to the rest of the back as he’s ever been. This isn’t 2004, people.
Team 11 - Marion Barber, Cowboys RB - Forget Felix Jones, Marion Barber is the man in Dallas, and could definitely come close to 1,500 yards rushing and 20 total TDs this season. He may seem like a risky pick, but he’s a great value at this point in the first round.
Team 12 - Braylon Edwards, Browns WR - I don’t hate this pick. It may seem early, but I understand what this owner was trying to do. Banking on the fact that there are guys like Michael Turner, Thomas Jones, Jamal Lewis, Brandon Jacobs, Willie Parker, Maurice Jones-Drew, Darren McFadden, LenDale White and Edgerrin James who are all likely to be available later on, the logic behind taking a top WR makes sense here. The only issue is that he took the wrong one. It should have been Reggie Wayne, who I ended up with 23rd overall. He-Man.
